The Okotoks Dawgs Baseball Academy is pleased to announce that catcher Chris Shaw has accepted a scholarship to attend Midland College in Midland, Texas in the Fall.
Shaw, a power hitting right handed bat and a strong defensive catcher was the crown jewel of an outstanding recruiting class that entered the Dawgs Academy this past year. Shaw was awarded Manitoba Player of the Year in 2010 as just a 10th grader and was awarded Top Catcher at Canada Cup in 2011, the second consecutive Dawgs' player to capture that honour (Jordan Procyshen).
Shaw will move on after this current season as a key recruit on a strong Midland College Chapparals club. The Chaps' Coach Hector Rodriguez had this to say about the signing:
"We are extremely excited to add a catcher of Chris' caliber to our recruiting class. We feel he fills a major need for next year. He is another great player, in the long list of Canadians that have come through our program."
In fact, Shaw joins a couple former Dawgs on that list. Jim Henderson, a member of the Dawgs original youth team, currently on the AAA affiliate roster of the Milwaukee Brewers and spending his off season on the Dawgs Academy coaching staff is a Midland grad. Also, Justin Lee, a graduate of the Dawgs first academy class in 2010, is currently in his sophomore year at Midland.
Another member of the original Dawgs youth team and current Dawgs Academy pitching coordinator, Tanner Osberg, was also committed to Midland before he decided to sign a professional contract with the New York Mets after being drafted following his high school season.
Shaw led the Dawgs Baseball Academy to a great showing at the Arizona Fall Classic in Peoria, Arizona before heading to Columbia where he competed for the Canadian Junior National Team and helped the team qualify for the World Junior Championships in 2012 by winning a Silver Medal.
Shaw will attend the Junior National Spring Camp in March and April and then travel with the team to compete in the Dominican Republic and later Seoul City, South Korea, host of the 2012 World Junior Baseball Championships.
Shaw is the sixth Dawgs' Academy player to sign a letter of intent to college following Ramon Valdez (Parkland Junior College), Wyle Cunningham (Salt Lake Community College); Brendan Rose (University of British Columbia); Billy Clapperton (Arizona Christian University), and Kurtis Taylor (Skagit Valley Community College).
